In the town you will find various shops as well as restaurants, a lake promenade and a lido. Worth seeing are the former Cistercian monastery, of which the east wing is still preserved today, and the local history museum founded in 1988, which focuses on the town and regional history. The Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve is located directly on the former inner-German border. A circular hike across the Strangen peninsula and along the Kirchensee impressively shows how formerly populated areas and border installations have been and are being reclaimed by nature. The just over 40-kilometer-long bike tour around the Schaalsee is also very beautiful.
